Mac OS X, OS X, and iOS

The naming of operating system versions causes some confusion at Apple. The original version of the iPhone operating system does not actually have a name – Apple uses the laconic designation “iPhone runs a version of OS X” in its marketing materials. Later, it begins to use “iPhone OS” to refer to the phone’s operating system. With the release of its fourth version in 2010, Apple began to systematically use the name iOS. In February 2012, it renamed the desktop operating system “Mac OS X” to simply [”]{dir=”rtl”}OS [X,”]{dir=”rtl”} which can be confusing. For example, in the title of this chapter, where I try to take into account the fact that iOS is based on OS X.
